Principal’s Message

It is truly an honor to serve as principal of Hornung Elementary. My journey in education really started in 1992, when I became a third grade teacher at Hawkins Elementary. I spent nine years in the classroom at Hawkins before assuming the role of principal there from 2001-2010. More recently, I was a grade level principal at Brighton High School from 2010-2013. These last three years at Hornung have been certainly incredible! Looking at my resume, I come with a wealth of educational and leadership experience acquired in Brighton Area Schools. With over 24 years of educational experience in Brighton, I feel like our school district is home. I do not view the position of principal as a job, but instead as an opportunity to lead our school to accomplish great things. The role of principal entails many exciting opportunities associated with student achievement. However, most importantly, my personal and professional goal is to provide children at Hornung with the best educational experience possible – one that will build a foundation for life-long learning.

My mission as principal is to always put kids first! My belief is that all students can learn, and it is our job to support all of their needs. As educators, we need to discover how each child learns in order to differentiate our instruction to support diverse learning styles; all children are different. I also want all children to love school! My passion for elementary education as well as the enthusiasm of my staff will always be evident. In a collaborative effort, we want children to thrive in all ways possible. At Hornung, our mission is to provide such an environment for all of our students.

Our school must be a place where students want to learn and have fun. I promise to provide a learning environment that is positive, safe, caring; a fun place to learn and grow. My goal is always to invest time in getting to know the Hornung school community – the students, parents, families, teachers, staff, and community members. My goal is also to provide our students the essentials needed for success in a safe and warm environment. The staff at Hornung will work together with the priority of having every student’s best interest at heart.

My message to all parents is to stay involved. This can be accomplished by staying in contact with your child’s teacher. Our expectations will be to consistently make sure you are aware of your child’s progress, and answer any questions or concerns you have at any time. This form of two-way monitoring will help ensure the success of your child’s education and well-being.

I feel fortunate and blessed to be in this leadership role and welcome it every day with open arms. This year there will be countless exciting events and activities planned for all of our students. Our outdoor education area with the pond featuring a waterfall is truly amazing. Our students love observing our fish and frogs that have made our pond their habitat. Again, I am thrilled to be Hornung Elementary’s Principal and I am looking forward to embarking on another exciting school year.

Sincerely,

Jack R. Yates
